Black Cherry

The Black Cherry tree, Prunus serotina, is native to eastern North America, Mexico and Central America. The Sweetbay Magnolia tree, Magnolia virginiana , is also called sweetbay, swampbay, or swamp magnolia. This tree is often grown as an ornamental landscape tree because of its attractive foliage, flowers, and fruit. It occurs naturally in moist and wet soils in wetland areas such as swamps and along streams and ponds. Red Maple

The Red Maple tree, Acer rubrum, is a deciduous tree which will typically grow 40-60′ tall with a rounded to oval crown. In northern states, red maple usually occurs in wet bottomland, river flood plains, and wet woods, but in the south, it typically frequents drier, rocky upland areas. Leaves are shiny green above and pale green beneath, 3-5 lobed and 3-6″ across. Sap of this tree can be used to make a maple syrup that is inferior in quality to syrups made from the sugar maple.

Jaboticaba - Large (eugenia cauliflora)

Native to southern Brazil the Jaboticaba, pronounced in five (5) syllables just as it is spelled, is a member of the Myrtle family and relative of the Guava. The botanical name “Cauliflora” means that it flowers and bears fruit on the trunk and mature branches. During it’s flowering period the tree is covered in clusters of small white flowers all over the trunk and branches. These eventually develop into dark berries, which are sometimes sold in delicatessens. The kernels of the fruits can be grown as bonsai which make pretty indoor trees. Japanese Hornbeam Forest (carpinus japonica)

Native to Japan the Japanese Hornbeam has elliptical, heavily veined leaves with a pointed tip that looks like a delicate painting. It is similar to the Korean Hornbeam but with longer narrower leaves and less twiggy growth. Has nice flowers in spring and smooth pink-grey fluted bark. The fall color is faintly orange to yellow and stands out in the landscape in the fall. Brown leaves often hang on the tree into the winter. Deciduous. Forest Pansy Redbud

The Forest Pansy Redbud tree, Cercis canadensis, ‘Forest Pansy’, is an excellent small tree for lawns, woodland gardens or naturalized areas. Effective if planted as a specimen or in groups. It is frequently planted as a street tree in residential areas. It is a small, deciduous, understory tree with a spreading, flat-to-rounded crown. Heart-shaped leaves open bright reddish-purple and gradually mature to a more muted purple. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.

Okame Cherry

The Okame Cherry tree, Prunus Okame, is one of the earliest of the flowering cherries. Its carmine-pink petals, with rose-red calyx and reddish flower stalks, open fully before leaf break. It has a very consistent year-to-year blooming habit. At maturity, ?Okame? Cherry trees will attain 20-30′ in height with a similar spread. The young trees display a broad-columnar habit; older trees develop a more rounded habit.It makes a fine specimen tree and should be sited where it can be easily seen in late winter/early spring.

The name Coolie Cap, which makes reference to the pill box-like hats worn by 19th century immigrants, is still sometimes used as the common name for this climbing vine. Named for Theodore Holmskiold, an 18th century Danish physician and professor, Holmskioldia Sanguinea is native to the Himalayan lowlands and is an erect scandent (climbing) vine that bears narrow, trumpet-shaped flowers (similar to the coolie cap)with crimson petals and orange-red calyces from summer to autumn.
