Chickasaw Plum The Chickasaw Plum tree, Prunus angustifolia, is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub or small tree which occurs in thickets, pastures, fields, fencerows, stream banks and disturbed areas. Chickasaw Plum trees are sometimes seen as a small short-trunked tree growing to 25′ tall. Beautiful 5-petaled white flowers appear along the stems in March before the foliage emerges. Native Americans regularly consumed the fruit fresh or dried it for winter. This flowering tree is a true ornamental.

Shumard Oak
The Shumard Oak tree, Quercus shumardii, is one of the largest southern red oak trees. It grows moderately fast and produces acorns every 2 to 4 years that are a bonus since they can be used by wildlife for food. A handsome shade tree, suggested as a substitute for Scarlet Oak, though not so hardy northward. The outstanding deep crimson-red fall color produced by the Shumard Oak is an excellent reason to plant this species. In urban areas, this tree has been embraced as a hardy city species. It is also a valuable lumber oak.

Desert Rose (adenium obesum) Native to East Africa and relative of the Plumeria. Small succulent tree that grows only about 8′ in the wild, has fleshy leaves and forms a bulbous base. Produces exotic 2″ pink and white, open-trumpet shaped flowers throughout the year in full sun. Needs little water during winter. All plant nuts love these. Fantasia Nectarine Tree The Fantasia Nectarine is a popular, large, yellow, freestone nectarine. The early harvest fruit is firm-ripe and tangy, later harvest is sweet, with rich flavor. It is high-scoring in taste tests. Eating a fresh nectarine, with the juice running down your chin is a joy of summer. Fantasia Nectarine produces very large fruit, bright red with yellow skin. They are self fruitful and very vigorous. They require pruning and thinning for consistent, quality crops. Moderate fertility and good drainage is a must.

Kousa Dogwood The Kousa Dogwood tree, Cornus kousa, or Japanese Flowering Dogwood, is a handsome small specimen tree or shrub. The Kousa is not as susceptible to disease as the White Dogwood in spring. It is planted as a specimen, near a patio, or in groupings. Kousa Dogwood trees blooms later than the White Dogwood and with a softer petal flower than the White Flowering Dogwood. The flowering tree, Kousa Dogwood, has low water requirements and displays a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils.

American Arborvitae The American Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis, is a conifer evergreen tree that is widely used as an accent tree or as a privacy hedge tree. American Arborvitae trees have a broad pyramidal shape with erect branches that are dense and crowded together. The leaf color is bright green above and pale green below and they may turn a yellow brown is some winters. When established it can stand considerable heat and drought. It may be sheared and shaped to fit into most every landscaping need.

Stella Cherry Tree
The Stella cherry is self-fruitful - no pollenizer needed. It has a large, nearly black, richly flavored sweet cherry. Similar to its parent, Lambert. Expect a later harvest with the Stella cherry. It will pollinate with the Bing cherry tree, except in mild winter climates. The flesh is also black in color.It is an excellent cherry for fresh eating. It is also resistant to cracking. Tree bears at a young age. Tree eventually reaches 15 to 16 feet tall. Watch for birds, they love the Stella.

Green Emerald Ficus (ficus microcarpa)
Also known as Green Island Ficus. Has oval to roundish dark green shiny leaves. Easily form rosetts at the end of its branches if kept trimmed. Branches and fruits well and easily develops aerial roots when kept humid. Different than other Ficus varieties in that the leaves are much thicker. Heavenly Bamboo (nandina domestica ‘firepower’) Also known as Sacred Bamboo and is related to the Barberry. This tough as nails evergreen has fine lacey foliage which turns bronze and red in winter. It has unbranched reed-like stems. In spring new foliage appears as bright bronze red and is soon followed by large creamy white flowers. In summer, clusters of bright green berries appear and by late summer, the berries ripen to a bright red. Does well indoors. MN Snowflake Mock Orange
The Minnesota Snowflake Mock Orange, Philadelphus x virginalis, is a compact, deciduous shrub that grows to only 3′ tall. Features fragrant, double white flowers that bloom profusely in late spring. Flowers appear in clusters with 5-7 flowers per cluster. It has oval, dark green leaves (to 3.5″ long). Blooms on previous year’s growth, so prune immediately after flowering. May be cut to the ground (also after flowering) if shrub becomes scraggly, unkempt or otherwise in need of rejuvenation.
