Canadian Hemlock

The Canadian Hemlock tree, Tsuga canadensis, is also called Eastern Hemlock or Hemlock spruce. This evergreen conifer is a fast-growing long-lived tree which unlike many trees grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more. Shelter small plants from drying winds. They stand shearing and pruning well and are excellent as hedges. They are graceful and make great ornamental plantings.

Fukien Tea – Forest (carmona)

Native to the Fujan Province of China, the Carmona has small white flowers that can bloom at any time. The evergreen foliage is dark in color and small in size. Informal upright with shiny dark green leaves which are thicker than the standard ficus leaf but thinner than a Jade leaf. Develops a thick trunk and aerial roots at a relatively early age. Japanese Five Needle Pine (pinus parvifolia)

The Japanese White Pine is the most commonly used pine for bonsai in Japan. It is an evergreen with very short stiff needles forming blue/green tufts of foliage at the branch tips, creating an overall fine texture to the trees silhouette. The brownish red cones are one to four inches long. The needles grow in groups of five which is why it is known as “five-needle-pine”. Hardy. Keep outdoors. 50 years old. 23″ tall. Well known for the superb colors of its foliage in autumn. The bark is a dappled pale brown and exfoliates with age, revealing a grey, orange and brown color. The small leaves (which resist scorching during drought) have 3 short lobes close together – hence the name “Trident”. The spring flowers are inconspicuous and the new growth is often bronze to purple. Very popular for bonsai because of the small handsome leaves. Decideous. European Beech (fagus sylvatica)

Naturally low branched tree with attractive glossy green ovate leaves which look similar in appearance to those of a Hornbeam. Variable leaves that are generally a bit wider than Japanese Beech. Smooth silvery-gray bark is quite ornamental. The bark looks like elephant skin on older specimens. The wood is almost white and is used most often in toys and furniture. The most distinctive feature of the Beech is its unmistakable cigar-shaped buds. These buds are rather tender. Natures way of protecting these buds is for the Beech to retain its dead leaves throughout winter. Decideous.
