Cell phones have dramatically changed our everyday way of life. So many people use them these days that it is possible to get in contact with anyone at nearly any time. They certainly come in handy in both our personal and professional lives, but they can get expensive. Because so many cell phones are used around the world, they are beginning to create an environmental problem. Cell phones are not meant to be disposed of in the garbage, but unfortunately, that is where a lot of them end up.
More and more people are becoming aware that electronics need to be disposed of in a special manner, and cell phones are no exception. If they are sent to landfills with the rest of our trash, they don’t decompose because the materials used to make cell phones are not biodegradable. They also can’t be burned or incinerated because the chemicals used in screens and batteries are toxic to the atmosphere when they are burned. In response, mobile companies have begun collecting used cell phones, sometimes offering incentives to consumers who return their old phone when they buy a new one. Beyond the money savings, you’ll also be helping to save the environment from unnecessary pollution and waste. Last but not least, purchasing used cell phones results in less new phones that are bought and used. If enough people begin to understand the impact that purchasing used cell phones can have – both financially and environmentally – then we could force manufacturers to cut back on the number of phones they produce – which will translate to less pollution in all phases of a phone’s life.
